Facts on the Mahatma
By Venkat Ramamurthy
The British called Mahatma Gandhi ‘The half-naked fakir’, albeit he never worried about it in tune with his high intellect and the simplicity that not only he preached, but also practiced. However, many may not know where he took the decision to only wear his dhoti only on the waist. Gandhiji came to Madurai by train on September 20, 21, and 22 in the year 1921 and en-route to the place he found poor peasants working on the fields with just a loincloth tied to their waists. The scene shook him so much that throughout the time he traveled up to Madurai he was thinking about the poor farmers that fed the humanity, but that wouldn’t have a good piece of clothing to wear. On reaching Madurai, he stayed at a house in Melavasi Street, where he determined not to wear an upper covering to his body. The house in which he took the historic decision to identify himself with the peasants has been converted into ‘Khadi Bhavan’. There is also an inscription here which says that Gandhi took the above decision here. Incidentally, ‘khadi’ or ‘khadar’ was the clothing Mahatma Gandhi advocated as an alternative to western dressing, which also marked as a protest against the English during the pre-independent days in India. After the decision, he immediately appeared in the public and gave his speech at Kamarajar Road, Madurai. ‘Nathuram Godse’ assassinated Mahatma Gandhi on Jan 30, 1948. The blood-soaked soil of the noble soul was put in an urn and a portion of it is kept in the present day Janata Dal’s party office at Ooty. The office belonged to the congress those days and even today the urn is being worshipped as a mark of respect to the great patriot, who was the foundation for India’s independence. By the way, Madurai is a place of pilgrimage in Tamilnadu, in India which hosts the beautiful ‘Meenakshi Temple and many other places like Tirumalai Nayakar Mahal. The region was ruled by the Pandya kings and has a rich Tamil culture. Ooty is situated on the Nilgiris or ‘Blue mountains’ and has the sobriquet ‘Queen of the hills’.
