Laurel and Hardy
By Venkat Ramamurthy
The famous pair of Laurel and Hardy of the black and white film age gave rib tickling comedy to the people of those days. The absolute contrast between them in terms of their physique in itself tuned the humor muscles of the audience in cinemas. Hardy married thrice for which his mate Laurel replied with a marriage four times. The successful comedy duo gave their funny performance in 106 films. However, their hobbies and pastimes were different. Hardy would relax with Golf, while Laurel engaged in fishing, breeding ducks apart from another different hobby that matched a scientist’s acumen. Laurel would grow plants in chemical solutions while it was conventional to grow plants on soil. When Hardy expired in 1957, Laurel surprisingly did not join in his funeral rites. When he was condemned for not participating in the final adieu of his long term mate, he replied that his ‘babe’ would understand him for his absence. The world could understand the void created by Hardy in Laurel’s life only later. Laurel was devastated after Hardy’s demise and it was as huge as his friend’s structure that provided entertainment to tired souls. He shunned acting in movies as a mark of respect to his departed friend. True to his career as a comedian who made everyone laugh, Laurel wished his inscription on his cemetery after his death should read something akin to, “If anybody looked drooping and morose during my last rites, I will not talk to them again”. Such was the since wish of Laurel that he wanted everyone to smile forever. Stan Laurel and Ollie ‘Babe’ Hardy were honored with a new statue of them located in Stan’s hometown Ulverston, Cumbria.
