Voice of Africa is no more
By Venkat Rama Murthy
Mama Africa is no more. The void of African singing is thought to be irreplaceable with the passing away of ‘Miriam Makeba’, fondly known as ‘Mama Africa’. Widely known for her Pata Pata song, Makeba was almost equals with Nelson Mandelain her protest against apartheid. Apartheid was the racial discrimination that existed in South Africa, which saw the humiliation of blacks in terms of living conditions and racial discrimination in their home land. Her singing stints saw her participate with Cuban brothers, Manhattan brothers and the Skylarks. She had appeared in a documentary ‘Come back Africa’ for a couple of songs and she had the unique distinction of being invited by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Salessie to perform at the inauguration of the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa. She even bore the brunt of her passport being revoked in 1960 and later flew into exile at United States, France, Belgium and Guinea only to return the country in 1990. As an anti-apartheid favorite, she was denied the attendance to her mother’s funeral. Her second name Zenzi -which her granddaughter also shares means ‘you have no one to blame but yourself’ for she had to fend for herself from all the odds that came against her life. Mama Africa’s Autobiography ‘Makeba - My Story’ should have had all the poignant elements that must have briefed a reader about the odds a black woman had faced in turbulent times. The song of Africa, or should we call the voice of Africa has heard the requiem and has been laid to rest forever. |
